DESCRIBE aimed to gain international and multidisciplinary consensus on reporting key participant characteristics in aphasia research.
Participants are described inconsistently across aphasia research making it difficult to interpret results, apply those findings, and re-use the information in systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
Firstly, we gained consensus on a minimum set of participant characteristics in a three-round e-Delphi exercise. Then we met online to refine the characteristics identified and pair them with standard response options.
Designed for use in post-stroke aphasia research, the DESCRIBE checklist supports the reporting of key characteristics of any research participant with aphasia. The DESCRIBE checklist should be consulted throughout the research process (study design, data collection, data analysis), but particularly when reporting aphasia research findings. The checklist can accompany manuscript submissions.
